No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for fast-track underwriting, how it works, and what happens if you don't.

A lot of carriers now have accelerated underwriting: for applicants within certain age and amount ranges they make a decision from your application, pharmacy records, driving history and other sources, skipping the medical exam. Some give approvals the same day. Each quote shows you whether that carrier will require an exam, might ask for one, or won't need one for that plan.

What it changes

Skipping the exam doesn't mean skipping medical review. Your answers get checked, and if you got approved based on false information a policy can be challenged in the first two years. If the carrier finds questions in your records they can still ask for an exam or bloodwork; you get to decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Typically people under about 60 getting coverage up to the carrier's fast-track limit, with a clean health history and no tobacco use in the prior year. If you've had recent bloodwork at your doctor's office, many carriers will use those results instead of requesting an exam.

An exam, if needed, is typically a 20-to-30 minute visit from a paramedic at your home or workplace in the Lafayette area, and it costs you nothing. For healthy applicants it can actually improve your rate class so an exam isn't necessarily bad news.
