Mount Diablo State Park sits south of Clayton and northeast of Danville, within a short drive from Lafayette. The peak rises 3,849 feet and is named for the Spanish 'Monte del Diablo' dating to around 1824, though the mountain has been significant to Bay Area peoples since ancient times. The mountain is the ancestral home of the Wilton Rancheria, Bay Miwok, Confederated Villages of Lisjan, Northern Valley Yokuts, Muwekma, and Ohlone peoples, and it remains sacred to Native communities in the region.

Mount Diablo State Park is known for its exceptional viewshed—described as one of the largest in the Western United States. On clear days, visitors from the summit report seeing the Sierra Nevada to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The park offers hiking trails ranging from short walks to demanding summits, mountain biking, horseback riding, camping at Juniper and Live Oak campgrounds, and the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center. The park supports wildlife including mountain lions, mule deer, bobcats, and over 200 bird species, along with seasonal wildflower displays.

Access to open space and outdoor recreation is a quality-of-life issue for families, and for many it's part of what makes staying in a place worth the financial commitment. A family might budget for outdoor weekends, trail access for runners or cyclists, camping trips, or simply knowing that wild space is preserved near their home. All of these are things that depend on the income and the time of the people who make the home: a reason to think carefully about what happens if that income disappears.
